Dr Paula Corredor Lopez, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Team Manager says “Any Newham family can just pitch up to speak to any one of our clinicians and have a one-off 40 minute consultation about the wellbeing or development of their children. No need to be referred and no need to wait to be seen.”
She goes on to say, “We want to provide early support for all young people and families who have concerns or questions about their children’s development or wellbeing. So any parent is warmly welcomed to pop along to any one of the sessions to speak with a CAMHS clinician face-to-face. They can also meet with or observe your child
and answer your questions.”
Families usually have to be referred to the team via their child’s school, nursery, GP, social worker or other professional or call in for a self-referral. So this is another option to have an informal chat between clinicians and young people or their parents about what they’re worried about. Access to immediate support and advice about mental health issues is not always available unless a child is in crisis, so Newham CAMHS is trying to address this and offer something different to stop concerns or behaviours escalating.
Dr Corredor Lopez continues, “Often families want to meet and talk face-to-face with an experienced clinician and discuss their concerns so this is an alternative to online advice. We welcome young people themselves, parents, grandparents, teachers, child minders … anyone who wants to pick the brains of a child specialist on a Saturday
